When it comes to Beauty, Spring is definitely the time I like to ditch some of the Winter Makeup essentials (bye bye berry matte lips!) and replace them with the products that are going to be a staple in my Summer makeup collection. And there are a few that I seem to reach for every year without fail, as well as some new beauty products that I know will be a hit this year. So let’s channel our inner J-Lo, and read on to see which beauty essentials are great for that Golden Goddess vibe!

Spring into Summer
I feel a bit like the British weather got a bit too drunk and stumbled straight into Summer…completely forgetting that Spring comes first! Apart from the beautiful daffodils that seem to be everywhere at the moment, there wasn’t much else that screamed Spring for a lot of March and April. But seeing as I grew up in South Africa and definitely love the warmer days, Summer is always the season that I look forward to most anyway.
It’s also a season where I feel the Beauty industry goes into overdrive and all of sudden we have a TON of new products that have launched and being the Beauty Product collector (I prefer collector to junkie ha!) that I am, I get all giddy to try the new stuff out and stock up before a holiday.
This year is definitely no different, and as we are off to France this week, I found myself searching through magazines, blogs and youtube videos for the latest makeup trends. And although every year there are some great new makeup bits to try, there are also a few that I have accumulated over the years that I seem to dig out every year.
Summer Beauty Essentials
My first ‘must-have’ for the Summer is definitely a glowy, dewy complexion. While in winter I tend to opt for fuller coverage matte foundations, Summer always makes me want to find a really long-lasting but dewy foundation that gives you that healthy and natural glow.
Of course, you can achieve this with a foundation, but it’s best to start with a good skincare routine that is going to give the skin a good amount of hydration before you even put your base on. (See my post on how I’ve adapted the 10-step Korean skincare routine for the guide on how to plump the skin with hydration).
The Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator is a new favourite of mine and is just what my skin needs at this time of year. It’s oil-free and leaves the skin feeling so soft and hydrated and foundation looks great over this.
The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is another new product that I bought this spring at the stage when I wanted to add a bit of a dewy look but was still working through my matte foundations. A little of this under the foundation acts like an illuminating primer and adds a beautiful sheen that just looks fresh and glowy.
But now we’re heading into Summer I can see myself either mixing this in with foundation or putting it over my foundation as a subtle Glossy highlight.
I am all for the berry/mauve matte lips in winter, but once summer hits…well those just feel a bit too ‘moody’ for this season. So I switch back to using creamier lipsticks or use a gloss on top of a matte lip. But as for the colours…well this is the season for bright pops of colour.
The two favourites that I reach for every year are my Mac lipstick in Morange (a bright orange) and Vegas Vault (a bright coral). These are just great shades that really look great with any eye colour and a simple eyeshadow look.
I love to add a gloss on top of these two to give that gorgeous summer juicy lips vibe that you see everywhere in the magazines. The Guerlain glosses are great for this, but I’m also keen to try the new Urban Decay Hi-Fi shine glosses.
If you’re not so keen on a bright lip or want a more daytime natural look, then I would replace the bright lip with a creamy nude. The L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Shine Lipstick in MLBB 642 is fast becoming a favourite of mine, but then I do always go back to my Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Bitch Perfect (still the best ever peachy nude!)
For that ‘Golden Goddess’ vibe, the eyes are key! But I like to keep it simple and easy with a cream or pressed eyeshadow in gold or bronze and use just a simple brown for the crease.
There are so many great Gold’s on the market but my two favourites are Nyx Prismatic Eyeshadow in Liquid Gold, or Makeup Forever’s Aqua Cream eyeshadow in Golden Copper. These are slightly orange in tone which suit my blue eyes, but for a brighter gold I love Makeup Geek’s Foiled eyeshadow in Magic Act.
Sometimes I pair the bright lip with an all over the lid matte smokey brown and just use a highlighter to make that inner corner POP!
When we think of the Golden Goddess look, I immediately think beautifully bronzed skin. And while I’m not naturally blessed with that gorgeous olive skin tone I am ok with faking it with sunless tanners and a good bronzer.
I spent last year looking for a Bronzer that I love and finally stumbled across the Nars Bronzer in Laguna which is just the perfect shade (for me atleast). I find this is one that blends well and with a light hand looks great in winter, but is also buildable for a very bronze look. It has some light shimmer in it if you look closely, but I don’t see that at all once it’s on the skin.
I am actually on the hunt for a more shimmery bronzer, so let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations. I would love to try the Hourglass Ambient lighting bronzers but…eeek, the Price!
A Flush of blush:
Summer is definitely a great time for blush and the shades that I lean towards tend to be the peachy/coral tones. Nars Dual Intensity Blush in Frenzy is an all-time favourite of mine and is a lovely coral colour that is still quite subtle.
For more of a glowy sheen on the cheeks, I absolutely love Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter in Peach Nectar (thanks to Lydia Elise Millen for that), or Milani Blush in Luminoso.
That Summer feeling:
There are a few other Beauty Essentials that I love in Summer which don’t fit into the makeup category but are still my favourite products to get me ready for Summer.
Tom Ford Orchid Soleil Eau de Parfum is a scent I absolutely love for summer (even though I got it for Christmas ha!), but to me, it is just the perfect ‘summer-evening-out’ scent.
Then to keep the skin glowy and hydrated I have been loving the Ouai Rose Hair and Body oil as well as the Cocoa Brown Rose gold body oil. I think this will be the year for shimmery body oils, so I’m sure there will be loads of new ones to try soon. And I’m all for it if it’s going to give me that J-Lo glow from head-to-toe!
Now you may be wondering where all the Glowy Highlight recommendations are? Well, fear not…I have a separate post coming just for the Glow. I felt there were far too many to talk about and also some new interesting developments coming this Summer for the highlighting side of things. So look out for that.
Let me know if there are any staple summer beauty items you would recommend or would love to try? And any beauty essentials I should be packing for holiday? I would love to know your thoughts.
In the meantime, I wish you all happy sunny days…
Love Bee x
